Our History

Ronald McDonald House at Yorkhill Children’s Hospital opened its doors to the families of Scotland on 6 March 1996.

Our HistoryBuilding the House at Yorkhill was made possible due to the hard work, determination and vision of Gerry McCudden.  As Scotland’s first McDonald’s franchisee, Gerry had the opportunity to see other Ronald McDonald Houses in operation first hand during his visits to America and realised what a benefit they would be to Scottish families whose children were undergoing treatment at Yorkhill Hospital. He brought the concept over to Scotland and founded the charity “Yorkhill Family House Ltd” which runs the Ronald McDonald House in Glasgow.  Sadly Gerry passed away in 2013, but the House lives on as his legacy.

Since the beginning we’ve been providing free accommodation to over 500 families each year while their children are patients at in Hospital.  Before we opened there were no facilities in the hospital for families to stay together.

Thanks to Gerry the House gives sick kids the best gift of all – their families.

Goodbye Yorkhill, Hello sunny Govan

On 10 June 2015 we opened the doors of our brand new House at the Royal Hospital for Children on the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital campus, Glasgow.

After 19 years and over 10,000 families we finally closed the doors of the House at Yorkhill and began a brand new chapter in the charities history opening our new House in Govan.
